What is the perfect grip in Golf?
Golf is a perfectionist's game, and there is always
scope to make your game better in this one. Even Tiger Woods says
that he keeps fine tuning his game every week; so we certainly should
look forward to doing that!
And one of the most common complaints is about
getting the perfect grip.
Players struggle for years and then realize that
the reason their game does not progress to the next level is because
they have been using a wrong grip all this while. The tragedy then
is that they have got so used to the grip that they cannot change
out of it just like that. It takes many more months of practice
and care to ensure that the old habits don't come back.
Since we are talking about the perfect golf grip,
here are the three most commonly used and recommended grips the
world over.
1. Vardon Overlap
Also known as the Overlapping Grip, The Vardon
Overlap was introduced and perfected by the golf great Harry Vardon
many years ago. This is also the grip which most professionals use
themselves, which makes it extremely likely that your coach also
recommends that you get started with this one. The little finger
of the trailing hand is placed between the index and middle fingers
of the lead hand in this grip; and the thumb of the lead hand fits
into the palm of the trailing hand.
2. Interlocking Grip
Almost similar to the overlapping grip, except
that the little finger of the trailing hand locks into the index
finger of the lead hand. This gives greater stability to the player,
but also runs a risk of the handle jamming into the palm of the
hand. Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus are two of the most well known
exponents of this golf grip.
3. The Baseball grip
Also known as the ten finger grip, this is simply
putting one hand below the other, with all ten fingers touching
and gripping the club. Most beginners start with this grip - especially
if they start golfing without a coach. Not that it is wrong; this
grip works well for many champions.
These are the three most common golfing grips,
and there are different schools of thought which each suggests that
one of these is the perfect golf grip.
But the real secret is that there is no one single
perfect grip. Depending on the player, and his / her comfort level
with a particular grip, it becomes the perfect grip for that player.
If your coach has benefitted from a particular grip in his career,
he is most likely to recommend that to you, and it is up to you
to see whether that grip is right for you.
The simplest thing you can do to ensure that you
achieve the perfect golf grip is by using a good quality golf glove.
This sees that your position of the club is always perfect, and
that way, whatever be the grip you are trying out, you are always
assured of giving the shot your best.
If you are not happy with your current grip, try
one of the others mentioned above, and you might find one of those
beneficial.
